Even The Daily Show Was Shocked by This Racist GOP Leader's Responses

For every discussion I hear about "The New South," there's a relic of the Old South not far behind.

The Daily Show recently talked to Buncombe County (N.C.) Republican precinct chair Don Yelton about the state's voter I.D. law. It's obvious that they were going to have fun, at Yelton's expense, about the racial overtones of the law.

But he gave them more than they ever hoped:

From Gawker:
Mandvi attempted to prompt a reaction by declaring "the law is not racist, and you're not racist."
Expecting Yelton to fire back with an unequivocal "no," Mandvi was instead treated to several long seconds of introspection, followed by, "well, I've been called a bigot before."
Then, as they say, things got weird.
Yelton attempted to explain away the charges of racism — always a good idea — by: 1. Insisting that one of his best friends is black; 2. claiming that the photo of Obama dressed as a witch doctor that he shared on his Facebook page was making fun of his "white half"; recalling how, when he was young, black people were called "negras"; and bemoaning the fact that black people can use the word "nigger" but he can't.
"You know that we can hear you, right?" asks a visibly nonplussed Mandvi.

West Union mayor blasted for anti-gay posts

The Mayor of West Union, S.C. has decided to come out.

Against gay marriage, that is.

Here's an excerpt: (and yes, the article below appears to have some fun at the Mayor's expense)

WEST UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -
When you hit Hwy 11 into Oconee County, you probably rolled through the small town of West Union, SC and didn't know it.
Nearly 300 people live in the town and it's run by Linda Oliver, who was elected as mayor.
"I don't want it rammed down my throat," Oliver said.
She's talking about a same-sex marriage. Recently, the register of deeds in Buncombe County, NC allowed 11 same sex couples to apply for marriage licenses and she disagrees with it.
"All I can say is if people want to crucify me that's fine. I know that following Jesus, I'm going to be crucified," Oliver said.
